Argue #140
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

Conclustion : we recommend that Thomas receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson.

Premise 1 : Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students.
Premise 2 : the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years.

Assumption 1 : Thomas
Rebuttal 1 : Thomas

Assumption 2 : Thomas

2. The money she brought to the university in research grants may not be significantly big comparing to other professors in the university.

<GoHackers Argue Essay>
The argument recomends that Professor Thomas should recieve a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson. However this recomendation is not convincing, because it relies on several unsupported assumptions.

First, the arthor assumes that Professor Thomas's large classes are resulted from her popularity and proficient teaching. However, there might be other reasons about that. For example, her classes might be required courses to many department students or she might give better grades than other professors. In that case, raising her payment and a promotion might not be effective as expected.

Second, the arthor also assumes that the reason of the money that Tomas has brought to the university in rsearch grants exceeded her salary in each of the last two years her research abilties. However, other professors in the university might have brought much more money to the university than her. Or maybe the government gave the same amount of money to all of the botany professors in the country to flourish the research of botany. If so, the recomendation of raising Tomas's salary and promotion is not persuasive.

Lastly, even if the two previous assumptions are true, the arthor still believes that if Professor Tomas does not get a salary-raise and promotion, she will leave Elm City University. However, the arthor did not provide efficient evidence to prove that. On the contrary of the assumption, Tomas might be very satisfied with current salary and position because she might think that she earns more than deserved. In that case, Elm City University does not have to consider raising Tomas's salary and her promotion.

In conclusion, the recommendation of Professor Tomas's salary raise and promotion is not persuasive because of some unsubstantiated assumptions. To strengthen it, the arthor should prove that her large size of classes is resulted from her proficient teaching and the money that she has brought to the university is for her research ability.
